After years of extensive research, prototyping and testing, Normann Copenhagen introduces Mat, a chair collection that leverages the highly renewable materials of hemp and eelgrass, a type of seaweed, as superior alternatives to traditional 3D shell chair materials.

For years, the furniture industry has seen numerous iterations of the same type of chair: the plastic shell chair. Normann Copenhagen now presents an alternative, more responsible solution, using the stems from the rapidly renewable and resilient hemp plant as a substitute for the plastic typically used.

Normann Copenhagen’s Mat Chair collection is a contemporary chair design with an unprecedented approach to materials. Mat, a reference to the material innovation at the core of
the design, comprises a shell crafted primarily of hemp fibers and a version with added eelgrass, a type of seaweed.
